The Strangest Interview I have Ever Had

I recently went on an interview for a position at a new internet company.  Having fully realized this “recession”, which feels more like a depression I thought this was a great opportunity.  I sat in the conference room watching the only person I have seen wear sunglasses in an office run around from desk to desk taking her sunglasses off.  She was also the first target of my ridicule.

She was of course my first interviewer.  She took the sunglasses off for our interview and asked the standard questions.  She told me to wait and I was then greeted by an overly fashionable man who had what appeared to be a fashion mullet.  I had spent some time in Spain and realized that Europeans can get away with crazier hair, but it doesn’t fly over here.  Even in New York.  He immediately asked if he could turn the lights off and turn the fan off.  Now the room was naturally well-lit so it was not dark, but then he asked to go for a walk.  We left the building and took a walk around a park.

It was the kind of thing you want everyone to do but when you are actually doing it everything about it feels wrong.  Kind of like taking a shower with your significant others.  So I made it through the walk and then had one last person to speak with.  The last person was very kind and intelligent, and did not smell of booze like the walker.

I left the interview a bit confused.  Isn’t this the environment where everyone is working as hard as they can not coming into the office smelling like a bottle of gin, which reminds us to write-up the best drinks for a man.

I took it as a learning experience and wrote a follow-up email and have not heard back, but will let you know.  It was the first time I have encountered an interview with no lights and someone who obviously just walked in from the night before.

What is the Best Suit to wear on an Interview?

We recently received a question about what to wear for a first interview.  He has a black and grey suit, as well as khaki pants and a blue blazer.

It obviously matters what you are interviewing for.  If you are a graphic designer khakis and a crisp shirt will work.  If you are interviewing for a powerbroker a black suit will work.  Our example today is a applying for marketing positions. We recommend a grey suit with a patterned shirt and modern tie.  This will portray the business aspect of the job while still conveying creativity with a nice shirt and tie.
